Which Shower is Right for You

When it comes to choosing a shower and shower head combination, the array of options can be dazzling. One can walk into a hardware store and it’s as if every company under the sun has a shower for you to choose from! So, how do you know what shower will suit you best?

Choosing the Right Kind of Shower

Though there are many options to choose from, showers are divided quite neatly into some very specific types. If you simply don’t know what to choose, looking at them from this perspective can often be a good guide to finding one that suits your needs. At the very least, it will narrow down your available options and make your task easier.

In the spirit of making the decision process easier and quicker, here is a detailed list of different shower types:

• Fixed shower: This is the one that most people are very familiar with. This is a shower arm that is fixed into the wall or ceiling and sports a movable head. From this point, you’ll find that fixed shower heads are further divided into different styles and flow types. You can choose from large square heads, small turret shaped heads or multi-function heads that can be twisted to adjust the flow rate of water. This type of shower head suits the majority of people.

• Adjustable shower head: If you’d like a little more flexibility than the fixed type provides, the adjustable head features both an arm and head that can be moved into different positions. This is particularly useful for people of different heights, and may suit families with growing children.

• Hand Held Shower: If you want maximum flexibility in a shower head, the Hand Held type allows you to simply remove the shower head, hold it, and then direct it at any part of your body. This is especially good for showering young children, where a parent needs to be able to direct the spray when shampooing hair. It is also good for seniors and carers where shower seating is utilised and the shower head can simply be directed by a third party. In contrast, because the flexible piping hangs, some people find this type of fixture annoying when showering.

Hand held shower on rails

• Showers on Rails: This is an innovative combination of the Hand Held shower head and the Adjustable shower head units, where the shower head can be moved up and down a fixed rail and clamped into position. It can also be swivelled to different angles and even removed to be held in the hand. This type of fixture is excellent for accommodating shower users of varying heights. The fact that it also functions as a Hand Held shower makes it a great choice for those looking for maximum flexibility without the limitations of other shower heads.

• Rain Shower Head: A particularly stylish unit with its flat modern looks – the arm can either be mounted on the ceiling or on the wall, and the rain head sprays the water as if from a natural rain shower, resulting in a shower experience unlike any other. These units are quite popular in luxurious hotels and custom built homes, but it’s a luxury that is affordable for just about anyone.

Making the Right Decision

Narrowing down the shower types by style and function is a great way to make a choice and once this is done you can then consider who the shower is for. For example, there’s no point investing in a fixed shower head system if your elderly and infirm Grandma is going to be using it daily. In this case, consider a hand held shower or a shower rail system instead.

If you’re the sort of person who loves the feel of a morning shower, maybe you should look at a rain shower unit. Ultimately, you’ll want the shower to feel good whilst being effective, and asking these types of questions and narrowing down the field is key to making the right decision for your needs.
