Renovating thе bathroom іѕ sometimes nесеѕѕаrу, but at other times it’s a fulfilment of a dream for homeowners. Aѕіdе frоm bеіng thе рlасе for “personal business”, bаthrооmѕ have bесоmе the at-home version of a dау ѕра. Sіmрlу рut, bаthrооmѕ аrе no longer simply a place where you wash your hands, take a quick shower, and brush your teeth. Luxuriating in a hot spa bath or just washing away some stress in a hot shower, all done in surroundings that relax you, is where bathrooms are heading.
The Bath Path
The basic function of a bathroom has been changing for some time, and that evolution has gone hand in hand with the changes in houses designed for different lifestyles. If you ever lived in a baby boomer generation house, you would know that space – or rather the lack of it – was the main problem. The bathroom and kitchen were utility rooms and places in which you didn’t spend a lot of time. Also, with one bathroom in a household, you had no more than a few minutes to do whatever it is you had to do.
The New Road
Fast forward to the 21st century and it’s a whole new deal for bathrooms. When once you looked through interior design magazines looking at rich and splendiferous bathroom designs with a sigh and a wish, things have changed to the degree that you can now have that exact dreamed-of bathroom in your own home. Your new bathroom could be an extension, a DIY, or planned into the design of the new home.
The List
Trends for the future will take into account every aspect of a homeowner’s dream of what the bathroom should look like. Taps, storage, baths, basins, mirrors, tiling, lighting – some bathrooms even have a relaxation area with sofas or chairs.
Do you want to watch TV while you are in the spa bath? Go for it…. and why not add a nice stereo system for the music of your choice.
Two Bathroom Homes
The thing to remember is that not many homes or apartments are built these days with just the one bathroom or toilet. That has resulted in bathrooms becoming “long stay” affairs for that hot shower, the long hot bath and the serious pamper. With only one bathroom, that was impossible.
Bathroom Waterfalls
Other creative designs that are gaining favour is the continual motion and sound of flowing water, which has a naturally soothing effect on a person’s sense of well-being. This can be achieved with clever placement of basins and bowls – a little like a waterfall into the bath.
His and Hers
The ‘his’ and ‘hers’ bathroom set up started in five-star hotels but now, we all know it’s actually a great idea, if you have the space. Apart from the practicality of solving the early morning rush when both partners need the bathroom, you get a good idea of just who is the messiest when it comes to bathroom cleanliness!
Tiling and Amazing Floors
While ceramic and mosaic tiles remain reasonably popular, the idea now is to use larger tiles, and these can be made of materials other than non-slip ceramic. Stone of different colours and origin are becoming very popular. Graffiti and pavement artistry is also finding an outlet in bathrooms. Bathroom floors can now be an artist’s canvas and after the work has been done, workers come in and lay a clear plastic acrylic over the top.
Some of the results on floors look absolutely amazing. The big advantage with larger tiles or one piece flooring is the cleaning and the smaller amount of grouting.
