The world famous International Bathroom Exhibition, Salone Bagno, was held in Milan this year and featured the up and coming trends for fittings, fixtures, and displays in bathrooms around the world.
Here are just some of the highlights from the 2016 exhibition, offering inspiration for those hoping to rejuvenate or build a bathroom this year.
1. A statement bath
Baths continue to take centre stage in our bathrooms, with the freestanding trend remaining. Unlike the traditional ceramic baths, though, there were some unique designs featuring slatted wood on the surface for something a little different.
2. Thinking outside the box
Items that were not all they seemed proved to be a huge hit this year, with one particular showerhead shaped like a desk lamp grabbing attention. This shower fixture allows you to move the arm around depending on where you’d like the water sprayed, combining functionality with design.
3. Pink gold
As we’ve already seen, rose gold become a huge hit in house design recently, so it’s no wonder the trend has continued into the bathroom – with a modern twist. Pink gold finishings on basins and showers are thought by designers to be the ideal way to contrast white tiles and, at the exhibition, looked particularly stunning with a wooden backdrop.
4. A soft touch
The latest range of basins from Ever Life Design has been constructed with a polyurethane material, making it soft to the touch but also durable. This could signal a huge change for baths, too, making them even more comfortable to lay in than traditional stone and ceramic designs.
5. Art and design
Artwork in the bathroom was another huge trend and one that can be as simple or complex as you wish. Many of the bathrooms featured had at least one piece of art, whether on the towels or toothbrush holder, bringing a splash of colour and design into the rooms.
6. Concept designs
There were some interesting concept designs at Salone Bagno this year, hoping to pick up interest from potential buyers and investors. A bath covered in soft fabric was a big hit and made possible thanks to the new age of water resistant materials.
7. Black tapware
As a slight contrast to the pink gold, black tapware was another standout design trend. This bold fixture looked ultra-modern and sleek against just about any bathroom backdrop.
8. Bold colours
Bold is back in the bathroom, with designers opting to select one main colour and run with it. Not only were the colours bold, but the shapes were geometric and modern, with everything from mirrors to cabinets included.
9. Optical illusions
Without taking anything away from their functionality, one bathroom displayed a sink and bath featuring obscure lines that played tricks on your eyes. This trend signals the desire for something completely unique in the bathroom, while not losing any practicality in the process.
10. Matching colour finishes
Another colour trend appeared with small splashes of colour found in the finishes and continuing throughout the entire bathroom design. Taps, lights, and towel holders each featured a small amount of a singular, bold colour and helped to bring every fixture in the bathroom together.
Each of these bathroom trends represents an exciting time for this area of the home. Where once people preferred to keep this space minimalistic, it looks now to be getting just as much attention as other feature rooms in the house.
